The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has declared 2023 the Year of Open Science. OSTP plans to launch a series of actions across the federal government aimed at promoting national open science policy, providing access to the results of taxpayer-supported research, accelerating discovery and innovation, and driving more equitable outcomes.
OSTP has updated the Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research policy guidance to reflect the federal government’s renewed commitment to evidence-based decision-making, guided by the best available data and science. Year of Open Science Programs include The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Transform to Open Science (TOPS) program which aims to expand scientific participation and accessibility.
For open data and science app builders, like us here at Ensemble, this is an exciting step forward in open science.
We have had the pleasure of building and maintaining crucial open science applications in collaboration with NASA including:
- Aurorasaurus: a citizen science based web application that tracks the aurora in real-time
- Spritacular: a citizen science based web application where users can upload scientific observations of transient luminous events (TLEs) such as Sprites and Blue Jets
With greater access to federally funded research, small businesses will have more resources to drive innovation and create new products and services. Additionally, the opportunity for collaboration between citizen scientists and businesses opens the door for exciting innovations & scientific advancements.
